We’re Back — and We’re Starting with Mariia 💙📚
Teachers for Peace is back for a new school year, and our first class feels like a very special way to begin.
We’re starting with Read & Talk Club with Mariia, a B1–C1 English club for young adults and adults.
But this is more than just a new class on the schedule.
It’s also a little story about how Teachers for Peace grows.
Mariia first joined our community with her children.
They came to learn.
They became part of our Teachers for Peace world.
And now Mariia is stepping into the classroom herself — this time as a teacher.
That, for me, is Teachers for Peace.
People don’t just come to us for a lesson. They become part of a community. Sometimes they arrive as students, sometimes as parents, sometimes as volunteers, and sometimes their role changes along the way.
Mariia is a Ukrainian English teacher currently living in Ireland. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English as a Second Language and Literature and experience working with children, teenagers, and adults.
She loves reading and conversation, so her idea was simple: create a club where people can read something interesting and then actually talk about it.
And Read & Talk Club was born.
What is Read & Talk Club?
The club is designed for young adults and adults at approximately B1–C1 level.
Each session gives learners the chance to read, think, talk, ask questions, learn new vocabulary, and share their own ideas in English.
It is not about speaking perfectly.
It is about speaking.
It is about having something interesting to talk about.
It is about learning from the text, from Mariia, and from each other.
Sessions may include short stories, articles, seasonal topics, discussion prompts, and other reading material that gets people talking.
More Than an English Class
One of the things I love most about Teachers for Peace is seeing people move through the community in different ways.
A learner can become a volunteer.
A parent can become a teacher.
A teenager can become a leader.
Someone who once needed support can later be the person offering it.
That is how a community grows.
And that is why starting the year with Mariia feels so right.
She first came to Teachers for Peace with her children.
Now she is bringing her own experience, time, and love of teaching back into the community.
We’re Back
Read & Talk Club is our first class of the new school year, but it is only the beginning.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be welcoming back returning teachers, meeting new volunteers, and introducing more English, reading, maths, wellbeing, conversation, and special learning opportunities for our global community.
Some classes will be open to our wider learning community, while our work continues to provide free educational opportunities for learners affected by war, displacement, crisis, and disrupted schooling.
Four years after Teachers for Peace began with a few children on Zoom, I still think the best part is watching the community grow in ways we could never have planned.
Students become friends.
Parents become part of the community.
Volunteers become teachers.
And sometimes, like Mariia, someone who first arrives with their children comes back ready to teach.
That is Teachers for Peace. 💙🌍
